Today is Marine Mammal Rescue Day! We are grateful to all of our partners who help us coordinate rescue efforts for marine mammals in distress, like this team who recently helped an adult gray whale entangled in a gillnet off Southern California’s Palos Verdes Peninsula. They used aerial drones and underwater cameras to document the entanglement. They found the net was tightly wrapped around the whale’s peduncle. The net had caught on a rock crab trap on the bottom, tying the whale in place. Aft

How do advanced technologies help save at-risk species? Our scientists and partners use time-tested and advanced technologies to study and monitor marine animals. Our goal: reducing the risk of extinction and promoting the recovery of these populations. We're using satellite tagging, artificial intelligence, drones, and acoustics to track where these animals are in the ocean, their migration patterns and behavior. We're learning about them on a molecular level using 'Omics. Learn about these and

There are millions of species in the ocean, and they’ve all been around a long time. They have inherent value—they’re valuable just for existing, in addition to the role they play in the ecosystem. If we don’t know about them, we’re not interested in them. Exploration is a critical first step in that process—raising awareness of these species, and learning about them so we can manage and protect them. In this video, NOAA marine biologist Allen Collins discusses why it is important to explore our
