I found that if my foundations are right, gardening is SO. MUCH. EASIER. Composting, testing my soil, and mulching are the 3 things I do every year…almost never fail. I have so many people ask me what fertilizer I use to get such nice crops. The only time I use fertilizer is if I see a plant that is really struggling with disease. That happens so infrequently. I’ve been loving the Redmond Soil test kits. They’re so easy to use. They take all the intimidation out of a soil test. Go to the link in

Basement grocery store tour (late winter edition!) We made it through another long winter eating the nourishing, homegrown food from our land. So grateful! Cheers to the new growing season! #Homesteading #MoreThanFarmers #GrowYourOwnFood #OrganicGardening #FoodSecurity

This tomato sauce hack has saved me hours and hours of time when canning tomato condiments. I can gallons and gallons of bbq sauce, marinara sauce, and ketchup. The recipes I use for these tomato condiments always ask for a tomato sauce as a base. No hours of cooking down sauce in a steamy kitchen. #Homesteading #HomesteadingSkills #OrganicGardening #RaisedBedGardening #Canning #HomePreservation #GrowYourOwnFood #FoodSecurity #Self-sufficiency #MoreThanFarmers | More Than Farmers

My favorite perennials are rhubarb, asparagus, strawberries, and red raspberries. I think of them as the backbone of my garden. They faithfully come up every year and do their job without my help while I run around planting all the annuals😂 if I was a beginner homesteader, one of the first things I would do is plant a whole bunch of perennials on my property. #Homesteading #HomesteadLife #Perennials #Asparagus #Rhubarb #RedRaspberries #Strawberries #MoreThanFarmers #SelfSufficiency #SelfSustain

This one of my family’s favorite recipes! And for candy, it’s actually pretty wholesome😍 Just 4 simple, ingredients…popcorn, salt, butter, and maple syrup! I use a candy thermometer to watch the temp of the caramel. This recipe takes about 30 minutes all together, but it’s not difficult. I love taking this caramel corn to any kind of fall gathering, and it always gets so many compliments! Ingredient list 1/2 cup un-popped popcorn kernels 1/2 cup butter 1 cup maple syrup 1/4 teaspoon salt Happy

Carrots are one of my favorite staple crops for self-sufficiency. On their own, they make a huge dent in our vegetable supply for the year. My favorite variety to grow for storage carrots is Danver Half Long. I harvest around 150 pounds of carrots in one day, throw them into grocery bags, tape them up, and store them in a refrigerator in our basement. No canning or freezing needed. They’re hearty, filling, and nutritious, and relatively easy to grow. Note: One thing I will add, by the end of the

Harvesting and drying herbs is one of my favorite homestead activities. It’s so easy yet so fulfilling! Many low end, grocery store herbs have been irradiated and just don’t taste amazing. Home grown and dried herbs pack a huge flavor punch and are healthy to boot! #Homesteading #Herbalism #HomesteadLife #Foraging #raised bed gardening #ChemicalFree #MoreThanFarmers #FoodSecurity #FoodPreservation #Self-sufficiency #Teas #Herbs | More Than Farmers

Don’t get me wrong guys, I value hard work! Kids thrive on hard work and routines. But there’s an old quote that goes something like this, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” I know people who have been very turned off by the line of work that their parents were in when they were kids. Once they’re of age, they turned their backs completely on it. They have too many difficult memories. They want freedom. If my kids decide they don’t want to homestead when they get older, I have zero is
